UK: Balfour Declaration was a catastrophe

September 21, 2017 Middle East Monitor 0

Britain acknowledges that the Balfour Declaration was a Nakba, or catastrophe, for the Palestinians, the government’s Arabic spokesman Edwin Samuel has said. In a television interview with Al-Ghad Al-Araby television station, Samuel maintained that apologising and recognising the State of Palestine is detrimental to the settlement of the conflict. “Britain’s position is that an apology and recognition of an unrealised Palestinian state does not help the situation,” he said. British policy has been consistent for a long time; two independent states, with justice and security as a result of direct negotiations between the parties. “Britain maintains its position that East Jerusalem is an occupied city,” he added. “There is no alternative to a two-state solution.” In his address to the […]

Netanyahu’s UN speech is replete with oblivion

September 21, 2017 Ramona Wadi, Middle East Monitor 0

The near-absence of Palestine contrasted sharply with the promotion of Israel’s international positioning in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the UN General Assembly. This is not the first time that Palestine was side-lined in Israeli ministers’ speeches – the spectrum ranges from incessant incitement of ethnic cleansing to non-recognition. However, Netanyahu’s latest speech clearly indicates Israel’s focus on foreign policy is directly tied to the disappearance of Palestine from rhetoric. As a result, any action taken by Israel to colonise Palestine will, in future, meet with tacit complicity not only by the international community as a collective, but also regionally and by individual countries supporting Israel’s multi-faceted endeavours. For the undiscerning, Israel was presented as an epitome of […]
